After centuries of research, the solution to becoming immortal is at last found. It is then decided to interrupt the development of humans at the most productive age of twenty-three. Very soon, the Earth becomes overpopulated and it is deemed necessary to prohibit people from having children. Any woman found pregnant is made to abort and any child found alive is shot on sight.
A couple defies the law several times until little June survives the authorities’ hunt for children. Shut in a cellar for his own protection until he is ten years old, the boy escapes and finds himself in the heart of a group of rebels – the Ephemerals. Made up of illegally born children, this small group regularly carries out missions in order to awaken the immortals, whose intellectual capacities are reduced by the injections of Bogolux, the product causing their immortality.
Caught between the extrasensory abilities of these mortals and the wearisome dehumanization of the immortals, June then faces an existential dilemma. Could the underlying fear of death be what leads to a full and exciting life?
